Over decades, the development in technology has meaningfully impacted educational approaches and trends. These emerging trends are well integrated by some countries however, other countries like us in Pakistan did not manage to integrate these technological advancement, educational trends that would have enabled our children in schools, colleges and university prepare themselves with advanced skills and innovation. We are still applying conventional educational approaches, teaching and learning methodologies that provide very limited opportunities for children to go beyond their curriculum (mainly textbooks). Nevertheless, it is never late to understand the modern and recent educational trends and modify our educational apprenticeship and charter. In addressing the challenge of access to quality and equitable education for children, our educational structure and framework must support teachers to effectively involve students in classroom learning by using modern developments in education. Therefore, they must be well-informed of recent and modern educational innovation, trends and advancements.

There are the five most essential educational trends outlined by Eric Debétaz which are substantially important for countries like us, prepare our teachers and school leadership to understand and practice these trends . I have summarized these trends for policy and curriculum planners, educational leaders,  managers and teachers to consider in the time ahead if we are sincerely willing, motivated and committed to improve our educational practices.

  1. Gamification, blockchain, Artificial Indigence

Technology has had a significant impact on society and has naturally permeated into the educational landscape. A wide range of media and learning support technologies are now available that enable students to receive top-notch online education courses and learning programs. These educational trends provide opportunities for organizations that wish to keep providing their pupils with challenging educational practices. These trends in education bring both advantages and disadvantages with reference to modern equipment, trainings and technological adjustments. Teachers are being forced to alter their teaching methods by the online platform and become lifelong learners.

The online format can make it easier for instructors to make modifications for various learning styles. To motivate advanced students to go further into the subject matter without disrupting the rest of the class, they may be given additional learning materials and challenges. This is possible through the introduction and integration of gamification, blockchain, and artificial intelligence.

Gamification is the strategic attempt to enhance systems, services, organizations, and activities by creating similar experiences to those experienced when playing games in order to motivate and engage users. This is generally accomplished through the application of game-design elements and game principles in non-game contexts. Gamified learning could be improved with the inclusion of AI, Big Data, cloud technologies etc. According to research, gamification makes learning more joyful, enjoyable, and rewarding. Students become more involved with the lesson and are more likely to want to participate when points and prizes. As it encourages students to use their imaginations to solve problems or complete tasks, gamification increases the likelihood that educational concepts will be applied practically particularly logical thinking. Teachers become teachers who provide in-depth explanation to the subject with practical applications through the use of gamified practices.

Blockchain technology is another development that has a substantial impact on education. A distributed ledger known as a blockchain duplicates and disseminates transactions throughout the computer network. All these procedures in the conventional educational model, from accessing credentials and academic records to validating transcripts, are significant barriers to its development and could be easily resolved by blockchain-based software. Blockchain technology is a foolproof method of storing data that makes it challenging for a system to be altered, hacked, or otherwise meddled with, which is essential for security and upholding the validity of certifications. This technology can be applied to examination and assessment system to ensure transparency and authenticity.

Artificial intelligence is the next key development that will shake up the education industry in the coming years, especially with the arrival of ChatGPT, a sophisticated AI tool to become a new type of search engine. AI tools and technologies can be useful for quickly grading papers, giving students individualized lessons, and assisting them in efficiently gathering information. Due to the quick development of technology, there are more and more lucrative career opportunities in this field. By using this technology, educational institutions can give students as much information related to industry likely to be quite successful. First and foremost, Artificial Intelligence will be crucial in creating plans that are tailored to each student’s unique learning needs and also there is a huge demand for jobs in data science, robotics engineering, and machine learning engineering.

While some people are embracing technology, others are resisting it and still favor the tried-and-tested traditional teaching methods but using artificial intelligence as a pilot experience might be beneficial for teachers to take one or two classes in artificial intelligence, data science, etc. to better understand these fields and modify their curricula accordingly.

2. Entrepreneurship, public speaking & leadership skills

Critical thinking, problem-solving, people management, and creativity as some of the most crucial workplace competencies for future market careers. Employers are looking for young professionals who can demonstrate their leadership skills and the ability to make difficult decisions. Therefore, schools must provide the instruction necessary to help students develop and grow in these skill areas if they are to adequately prepare students for their future careers. However, as was already mentioned, this presents a challenge for many teachers due to the concurrent trend towards online learning. These teachers will need to find a way to strike a balance between the amount of screen time students spend in class and the value of encouraging them to collaborate in person to foster the growth of soft skills.

However, institutions that find effective methods for fostering the development of these skills will find that this trend presents them with a variety of growth opportunities. These institutions will specifically discover that they have a competitive advantage within higher education. As future students seek out universities with high alumni success rates, their students will be more employable, which will raise their alumni success rates and create a positive feedback loop.

3. The Nano or bite-sized Learning trend

Nano or bite-sized learning is a teaching approach that involves presenting content in small, focused chunks to engage students. In a live online or onsite class, consider breaking up lecture time every 15 to 20 minutes. It can be challenging to focus on one task for an extended period of time due to the constant stream of games, movies, news stories, videos, and other media that the majority of us are exposed to on a daily basis. This is why nano or bite-sized learning is becoming more and more popular: To make complex subjects easier to understand, they are divided into manageable chunks. The majority of the time, this aids students in mastering the subject matter because taking in too much complex information at once can be demoralizing.

It is discovered that attention span is reducing over time due to excessive use of machines. This decline has primarily been attributed to technology’s nature and the constant stimulation it provides viewers. The alterations in attention span are also a great way to distinguish between the various generations. Teachers must adjust the pace and method of delivery of their courses in order to create engaging classroom environments for their students. They must keep in mind the value of a compelling narrative, visuals, and nano-learning principles when designing their course.

However, keep in mind that students have a great potential to pay attention when given highly visual and engaging material to read. These contemporary learners value interaction and want to be challenged. These students can offer rewarding opportunities for classroom growth for teachers who learn how to interact with them.

4. Facilitating learning versus teaching

Technology development has altered how teachers interact with their students and their learning environments. Students today have access to a wealth of information that gives them the resources they need to independently learn a tremendous number of facts and information. Teachers now play a more facilitative role in the classroom. Their position has gradually changed to one in which they assist students in learning how to discover and comprehend the information they find as well as how to love learning.

Teachers may face difficulties because they need to develop their own leadership and problem-solving soft skills. They must acquire the skills necessary to promote dialogue and foster a culture that values cooperation. Teachers who can encourage students to take responsibility for their learning will be the most effective. Teachers will find themselves in a position to get immediate feedback on their teaching effectiveness as they become more involved in the learning process of the students. As the class progresses through the material, their capacity to foster and facilitate these skills in the classroom will become quickly apparent. This new approach will prove to be incredibly rewarding for educators who want to place a greater emphasis on student development as opposed to merely imparting knowledge.

5. Life-long learning trend

As result of amazing changes and tremendous technological advancement and changes in how people perform their jobs, the current 4th Industrial Revolution may have a staggering huge impact on employment. Professionals must constantly update their skills if they want to stay competitive in their field. They cannot believe that the education they received during the first two decades of their professional lives will be sufficient for the duration of their working lives, hence, an education must be followed by continued learning. As a result, educational institutions must encourage faculty, staff, and students to view themselves as lifelong learners. In order for students to continue learning and participating in their chosen fields, classrooms must provide opportunities for teaching self-learning techniques. However, schools that teach these skills have the opportunity to keep in touch with their graduates throughout their careers. They can provide continuing education programs that will keep their former students abreast of advancements in their fields and ensure that they return to the institution for the help and instruction they require.

As a result, schools have the opportunity to expand as they develop new initiatives and opportunities for adult education to support the success of their alumni in the rapidly evolving workplace. Technology has had a significant impact on how people earn money and prepare for careers in the workplace as it changes society. Institutions that learn how to keep up with these changes will put themselves in a position for expansion and success. Think about how these trends might affect education and what they signify for future higher education institutions.
